Dennis N. Steffen, 41. Shot once in the chest late June 1 in the bedroom of his duplex in the 200 block of Southeast 28th Avenue in Hillsboro, in a dispute over a woman. A U.S. Marshal Service task force tracked four Hillsboro residents to Miami, where they were arrested six weeks later. James Randall Eckert, 35; Eckert's girlfriend, Leslie D. Murray, 28; and Eckert's brother, Payson Michael Young, 25, were charged with murder. Thomas Lawe, 35, a friend of the three defendants, was released from jail on a charge of hindering prosecution. Eckert claimed self-defense but several people heard Eckert threaten to kill Steffen several different times, including the day of the shooting. Eckert was angry that Murray had sex with Steffen. Eckert was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison. Young was sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to first-degree manslaughter as an accomplice. Murray pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter for buying bullets for Eckert, who told her he wanted to take her target shooting. Murray was sentenced to six years and three months in prison.
